London Ontario Greenery

Today, January 30, 2026, marks an important milestone for the City of London, 200 years since the community was formally established in 1826. Over two centuries, London has grown from a small settlement into one of Ontario’s largest and most vibrant cities, shaped by resilience, partnership, and civic pride. As we recognize this bicentennial year, it is also an opportunity to reflect on how public safety and community governance have evolved alongside the city we all call home.

Policing in London has a long and evolving history. The London Police Service was established in 1855, with just eight officers serving a community of approximately 10,000 residents. Today, it is a modern police service of over 900 members, including sworn officers and civilian professionals, who work every day to serve a diverse and growing population. Despite the city’s dramatic changes over the past 200 years, the commitment to community safety has remained constant.

The London Police Services Board provides civilian governance and oversight, helping ensure the police service remains accountable, transparent, and responsive to local needs. As London marks this historic anniversary, we honour not only the city’s past but also the partnerships that continue to shape a safer future, from early patrols to today’s community engagement, strategic planning, and oversight practices that support public trust.
