Becoming a Board Member

Becoming a police board member in Ontario is an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to community safety and well-being. Police boards play a vital role in ensuring that policing aligns with public expectations, budgets, and legislative standards.

Boards are composed of municipal and provincial appointees and are intended to reflect the diversity of the community, bringing varied perspectives and expertise to help ensure decisions are fair and well-rounded.

Serving on a police board is a valuable and rewarding way to make a real difference in your community. It is also a considerable time commitment, requiring dedication and active engagement, but it offers a significant opportunity to help build public trust, ensure accountability, and address complex issues related to equity, governance, and public safety.

The London Police Service Board is composed of seven members:

  • Three elected members from London City Council.
  • One person appointed by City Council. This person cannot be another member of City Council or an employee of the City of London.
  • Three persons appointed by the Province of Ontario.

Members must meet eligibility requirements and complete mandatory training on governance, diversity and oversight.

Who can join?

Anyone residing in the City of London, Ontario who would like to serve on the London Police Service Board can apply to join with the exception of a:

  • Judge
  • Justice of the peace
  • Police officer
  • Criminal defence lawyer

If a position is available, you can apply for a municipal appointment to the Board by accessing the information and an online application. (If there isn’t an application form available at this link, then there are no Board positions currently available.)

Through the Province of Ontario

You can apply for a provincial appointment to the Board by accessing the Government of Ontario website for public appointments.
